The DRR is a safe, independent, neutral and confidential service provided to Calgary Fire Department (CFD) employees. It is a place to share challenging experiences you may be having or to explore approaches to addressing workplace conflict with a third-party professional.
-
-
The DRR is designed to be here at your request and available when needed. We understand that the fire department is a 24/7 service and will do our best to work with your schedule and availability in a timely manner. Meetings are by appointment only. When you contact us we ask that you let us know the best times to contact and meet with you.
-
The DRR is a safe, independent, and third-party service that operates independently of the City. We do not share any of your personal information with the City and the City will never know if you used the service. We offer the option of virtual meetings and the option to use your personal email address to help ensure your confidentiality. And, as professionals, we understand the requirements of maintaining confidentiality when working with your personal experiences.

Yes. Bystanders, friends of those experiencing conflict, and supervisors supporting conflict in the workplace or looking for support in approaching a difficult conversation can all use the DRR.
-
As a safe, confidential, independent and third-party service, the DRR is not obligated to act on information you share. This distinguishes it from City services like HR and the Whistleblower process which are required to act on information that may violate a policy or procedure.
Please note the DRR may be required to take action or disclose certain information when there is an obligation to do so, including:
Actual or risk of serious and imminent harm to self or others,
Interference with a minor,
An act of violence against our staff, and
If we are compelled by a legal process.
Do you have any questions on this part? I want you to feel safe and secure that this process is confidential, but that there are these scenarios, that I just described, when I cannot keep things confidential.
-
The DRR is responsible for reporting to the City Manager and provides high-level, statistical information in a format that obscures the specifics of individuals who access the service in order to maintain confidentiality.
The DRR may also provide insights or recommendations that will further support a safe and healthy workplace for Calgary Fire Department members.
-
Yes, your union is aware of the DRR service and was provided information about the service prior to launch.
-
We want you to feel safe and supported in the process. Generally we meet with people one on one, especially for the first meeting. However, if you want a support person we can discuss that and find an arrangement that works.
-
Employees may attend a meeting with the DRR on either paid or unpaid time. For confidentiality reasons, many employees choose to attend the DRR on their personal, unpaid time. Employees may attend during work hours if it is approved or does not disrupt work.
-
The DRR offers services both virtually and in person. Flexible meeting locations are available and can be considered based on individual needs, geographic location and confidentiality. Should you want to meet in person, we can discuss a location that works for you.
-
What happens after speaking with the DRR is entirely up to you. The DRR is impartial and does not take any action on behalf of the employee, supervisor, City or Union.
Any employee’s interaction with the DRR is entirely voluntary and employee-led. Employees can reach out as often as needed and stop anytime.
-
The DRR is designed primarily to support people involved in respectful workplace situations or who are having conflict. You are welcome to send us a question or request a meeting to meet us to have a preliminary review of your matter and determine how we can best support you.

Conflict and challenging situations happen in the workplace and these interactions can impact how we feel and perform at work or home. Having resources like the DRR, to support these interactions can help you navigate them personally and professionally. We are here to listen if you want to talk about your experiences and to explore possible approaches to address the situation(s).
-
Often, signs of workplace conflict go unnoticed or we downplay the impact they have on us. Signs that you may be experiencing conflict (personal or with a coworker or citizen) that is impacting you and/or your work include:
Avoiding certain people or situations
Feeling triggered or reactive to a person or situation; feeling frustrated, angry, confused or shut-down
Feelings of dread or resistance in relation to people or situations
Historical incidents or actions that you still think about
Stress over approaching conversations or situations
Experiening harassment or discrimination
Not sure how something may have been harassment or hurtful
Having said or done something that may have been offensive
-
The DRR is an additional support for employees; it does not replace any other City of Calgary service.
